Breakout (打砖块)

Game Introduction

Breakout is an arcade classic where you control a paddle at the bottom of the screen to deflect a bouncing ball. The objective is to destroy all the bricks arranged at the top of the screen by hitting them with the ball. If the ball passes the paddle and falls off the bottom of the screen, you lose a life.

Clear all the bricks to advance to the next level, where the challenge increases. The game combines skill, timing, and a bit of strategy to become a timeless and addictive experience.

Game History

Breakout was developed and published by Atari, Inc., and released in 1976. Conceived by Nolan Bushnell and Steve Bristow, it was heavily influenced by Atari's pioneering 1972 arcade game, Pong. The single-player "ball and paddle" concept was a natural evolution, adding a new layer of objective-based gameplay.

The hardware prototype was famously built by Steve Wozniak, with Steve Jobs managing the project. Wozniak's efficient design minimized the number of logic chips required, a significant engineering feat at the time. Breakout's simple yet deeply engaging mechanics have made it an enduring classic, spawning countless clones and influencing many future games, including the famous Arkanoid.
